RUN a MAC 128 emulated on a TEMU RP2040-Zero board! How to modify the UF2 to use different GPIO pins
#pico-mac #umac #RP2040 #rpipico #retro #macintosh128
Spidermaf demonstrates how he created a new UF2 firmware file with changing GPIO pins to use pico-mac on a non standards Rpi pico board such as the RP2040-Zero from TEMU. This is a walk through of what I did - but it took a bit of experimentation, and I lost some of the footage and re-recorded, so I may have ommited some steps on here inadvertantly. Soz!

    Thanks for the video! I printed some parts and the assembly (snap fit) goes relative smoothly, but once the parts are together, the "friction" is high, making movement very difficult. As a result, the servo doesn't generate enough force to move the components effectively. Do you have any suggestions or advice on how to reduce the friction? Thanks!

      Maybe try a bit of Lithium grease? The white stuff they use on ball bearings on the bike. Tell Me did you use ABS? Will said in his video that abs was tougher but a bit more grippy IIRC. Maybe just use a drill bit and hand turn it inside some of the hole to give a bit less tolerance You might break the parts trying to get them apart so maybe do some test prints and see if youcan improve the movement of the joints by gently reaming out the inside of the holes with the correct size drill?

    Great guide! What LCD is that at the end of video ? I may have a look at integrating sd-card booting into this so disks and the roms can be loaded or booted without having to re-compile the firmware. I'm the developer of Faux86-remake 8086 emulator for rpi and pc BTW.

    • @spidermaf
      @spidermaf 5 дней назад

      I think there is a provision for sd card in the repo but that is more so you can have a persistent file system if I understood correctly. I've order a couple.of sd boards to try that side maybe after I do my pcb video, just waiting for the pcbs to arrive and test them. If you've developed some emulation already you can understand this better than me but being able to swap out the discs would be great.

      Would love an ST on a pico. Unfortunately don’t think enough ram on an RP2040 for a 512k ST, not even enough for the very early 256k models. The new RP2350 has double the ram but still wouldn’t be enough for the full 512k. The RP2350b though can have psram chip to expand ram. The Pimoroni pico2 plus uses it with 4mb of psram so hopefully someone will be able to develop it using one.

    • @spidermaf
      @spidermaf 5 дней назад

      @alexcranmer8317 this is an amusing conversation as I was always an amiga lad and the great ST verses Amiga still burns strong probably.. but thinking about the chips in the amiga I doubt you could use the 2040 to emulate one completely, so I guess the ST would be similar. I had a device which took mac roms and allowed you to run apple stuff on the amiga, but doubt that's reversible. It just a case if the memory allows to get the emulator running on a Pico chip. Easy for me to say but need minds greater than mine to work it out. Anyone reading think it may be possible?

    • @alexcranmer8317
      @alexcranmer8317 5 дней назад

      @@spidermaf Thanks for this guide, had been looking at building a picomac but never made my own builds before so will give it a try now. I was an ST guy so know a lot about that machine. Think it would be easier to emulate an ST than an Amiga as a more basic hardware used compared to the custom chips in the Amiga. Looking at the github for the picomac I think the maximum memory you can have on an RP2040 is 208k from the available 246k so would definitely limit an ST or Amiga build.

I found a nice little trick to make the snap fitting quite a bit easier: Use a small amount of heat. It gives just enough give to allow for and easy fit. But, do not overheat the joint as it will become molten quite easily.

    I've had the same thing happen with mine. I've also thought it might be the metal coating on the inside of the glass protrusion that needs to be renewed. Not sure and haven't checked. Nor would I know how to go about removing the old coating and resurfacing it without breaking the glass. At any rate so long as it has nothing to do with the gas inside the evacuated globe, there should be a way of getting it to behave as when it was new.

      Yeah, it's interesting. Cheap enough to do some experiments with at some point. I wonder if the same happens with more expensive variants

    RISC-V is an open source CPU design, which we'll start to see more and more of. For programming in C++ or Python, it doesn't make a lot of difference which type of core we use because the performance of the ARM M33 cores is apparently quite similar to the RISC-V ones.

    Amazing how cheap this sort of kit has gotten. BTW, setting the counter to a much higher number would give you the opportunity to time the flashes to allow you to better gauge the speed difference. Just a thought.

      Yeah. That's a nice idea. I just wanted to do something visual and familiar.. I'll leave the science to the benchmarking guys 👦 thanks for your comment.

      Nah, shortish makes for easy counting. Count how many flashes each does in 20 seconds, and you can work how their speed difference.

      That should be you're (the contraction of "you are") and not your (the possessive form). Back to school! 😁 An example: You're obviously not too clear about the difference between your you're and your your. Clear? 🤣

      The base is just less than 14cm×10cm and with all the parts in its approx 6.5 cm high, although might go a little higher than that depending on the position of the up down servo linkage
